The home of combat sports in Victoria, the Melbourne Pavillion, once again plays host to Powerplay Promotions this Saturday 1st April as the 33rd edition of Powerplay features a World Kickboxing Federation (WKBF) World Title fight between Victor Nagbe and Elliot Compton.
The event will also be live-streamed right here at Fight News Australia.
After two aborted attempts to make this fight happen, fans will finally be able see a top-class match-up between two of Australia’s best Super Welterweight fighters as former stablemates Victor Nagbe (50-13-0) and Elliot Compton (26-9-1) go head-to-head in a five round battle under K1 rules.
At only 23 years-of-age Nagbe has faced some of the best Thai fighters in the world with fights against the likes of Baukaw, Kem Sitsongpeenong, Saenchai and Yodsanklai over the last few years. With experience on his side, Nagbe enters this fight with an distinct edge over his Queensland-based opponent. Compton, who won the Australian Muay Thai Awards Knockout of the Year for 2016, is coming off a big year of fights where he ended the period with a highlight reel finish against current Lion Fight World Champion Tum Sidyodtong back in October.
The semi-main event of the night features a five-round K1 rules fight between New Zealand fighter Brad Riddell (47-6-0) and Adelaide-based Thai, Jonrob Strong Heart (140-60-0).
Having recently moved to Adelaide last year and now fighting out of Strong Heart Muay Thai, Jonrob is a veteran of more than 200 plus fights with regular appearances in both China and on the Max Muay Thai promotion.
Riddell who currently divides his training time between Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket and Auckland City Kickboxing, trains with some of the top fighters in the region including The Ultimate Fighter alumni Kai Kara France and recent Glory Kickboxing world title contender Israel Adesanya. Riddell is coming off a big year of results in 2016 with wins against both John ‘Wayne’ Parr on Caged Muaythai 8 and Frankie Georgie on Powerplay 31. With the fight scheduled in the 74kg weight division, Riddell has a distinct weight advantage over his Thai opponent who ordinarily fights anywhere between 68-70kg. The K1 rule set in this fight will also better suit Riddell who is partial to taking fights in disciplines other than his native muay thai with his last win coming in MMA at an event in China in January with a second round TKO win over his much heavier opponent.
In a stellar matchup between two of Victoria’s best lighter weight fighters, Chris Nguyen (15-6-0) will take on Albert Xavier (15-7-1) at 61kg in a five-round muay thai battle.
Both fighters are coming off losses in late 2016 with Nguyen losing a five-round decision to the late Scottish fighter Jordan Coe on Rebellion 13, while Xavier will be looking to get back in the winner’s circle after a knockout loss to River Daz on Warriors Way 17. Xavier will be coming into the fight with a slight weight advantage having previously fought just below 63kg, while Nguyen’s last fight was at 59kg. In addition to the possible weight difference, Xavier also has the advantage of finishing more of his fights via knockout, with over half of his wins coming via stoppage.
