Coming off his appearance on The Ultimate Fighter: Australia vs U.K reality show, Sunshine Coast, Queensland based fighter Grant Blackler was expected to retain his Fury MMA title as he returned to compete in the featherweight division on Friday night. He was making his return in front of a loud & pro-Blackler crowd in the main event of Fury MMA 5. His opponent though, Pat Promrangka (pictured) wrecked the homecoming party as he knocked-out Blackler in the first round to silence the crowd and capture the Fury MMA Featherweight Title.
Fury MMA 5 was held at the Caloundra RSL in Queensland Australia and was jam-packed with entertaining bouts and come-from-behind victories.
Blackler landed an early punch, before being put on his back through a big slam by Promrangka. Blackler though recovered straight back to his feet and got a take-down of his own. Promrangka too didn’t waste time in getting back to his feet and once there, the heavy handed Impact MMA fighter connected with a big right that dropped Blackler against the cage. Before Blackler could recover, he was met with three further flush punches as the referee jumped in to save the heavily dazed fighter at 1:50 of the opening round.
After going 0-2 in his first two professional fights, Promrangka has now lost once in his last six fights with that coming at the hands of Reece McLaren back in April. It is also the third big knockout victory as Grant Blackler dropped his first fight (not counting his loss in the TUF Smashes house).
Mike Aarts got another shot at a Fury Title, this time stepping up on late notice to take on Brendan O’Reilly for the Fury Lightweight Belt. O’Reilly made his intentions clear as he put Aarts on his back within seconds of the fight beginning. From there the Gamebreed gym fighter transitioned to mount and a few punches forced Aarts to turn his back. O’Reilly immediately took the back and looked to secure the choke however Aarts’ chin stayed down. Aarts recovered and got the reversal where he landed a few short shots from inside the guard. O’Reilly locked up a tight triangle but Aarts squeezed his way back to his feet just as the buzzer went for the end of the round.

It was the same game plan from O’Reilly as he started off the second round with another quick take-down. O’Reilly was able to again take the back and this time managed to get his arm under his opponent’s chin to secure the rear-naked choke win. With the win, O’Reilly captured the Fury MMA Lightweight Title.
O’Reilly is now undefeated after six professional fights and has won two straight since the no-contest bout he had in Japan last March.
South Australian Suasday Chau continued his impressive streak going with a second round submission win over Callum Lewis. It was Chau who got the early take-down as the two fighters wrestled against the cage. From there though, Lewis though got the sweep and ended up in guard from where Chau positioned positioned himself to his right attempting to attack the arm of Lewis. The local based fighter never looked in too much danger and the referee chose to stand the fighters up. On their feet, Chau landed a solid leg kick before Lewis got a take-down off his own. Chau wrapped up triangle choke which allowed Lewis to move to side-control where he finished the round dropping knees to the body of Chau.
In the second-round Lewis landed a right straight before the two fighters clinched. Chau pulled guard attempting the guillotine choke, which looked like a mistake as Lewis easily set himself free. Chau though showed how dangerous he is off his back as he locked up a quick and tight armbar. Lewis immediately verbally submitted as he dropped back to his back holding his arm.
Chau got the win 57-seconds into the second round and will return to Queensland in April on the Fightworld Cup event.
Simon Clough overcame an early knock-down to come-back and got the TKO referee stoppage with seconds remaining in the first-round. Governor did well to avoid the early take-down attempts from Clough. As the two fighters separated, Governor dropped Clough with big shots however Clough managed to recover and take the fight to the canvas. Inside half-guard Clough unloaded with short punches, before transitioning to mount where the punches continued. Governor turned his back and looked to escape however as the punches continued, the referee stopped the fight with 3-seconds left in the round. Governor immediately stopped up and protested the stoppage.
Earlier in the night, Dean Purdon who came to fight in his ‘Minowaman attire’ got take-down after take-down on route to a unanimous decision win over 16 year-old Joseph Murphy. Murphy did have his moments though, in particular clipping Purdon with late punches however Purdon was able to control the bout to take the 30-27, 30-27, and 30-28.
Jarrod Nevell utilised a superior Thai-clinch to defeat his opponent Rian Rees, stopping him with knees in the third-round. got the early take-down and was able to control the early portion of the fight on the ground. As the fight went on though it would be his knees in the clinch that started to find their mark and dropping Rees in the third-round. Nevell landed a few more punches before referee halted the action at 1:10 of the third.
Also on the card, Tanera Terry won a decision over Kieran Ramsdell scoring 30-27 across the board to take the unanimous decision, while in the opening fight of the night Daniel Allen was arguably behind two rounds to nil, when he dropped his opponent to the canvas and followed up with strikes to get the referee stoppage with 3-seconds to spare in the fight.
Fury MMA is set to return with their sixth promotion on June 8.
