Aussie/Kiwi middleweight contender Robert Whittaker may just get the UFC title shot that he asked for following his impressive victory over Ronaldo Souza at UFC Kansas City on the weekend.
Current middleweight champion Michael Bisping expressed his interest in the fight on his podcast ‘Believe You Me.’
“If they (UFC) wanna do Whittaker after I’ve beaten GSP (Georges St-Pierre) I’m down,” Bisping said.
He even went as far as to say that Whittaker is the most deserving of a title shot after his fight with St-Pierre.
“I see Robert as a more worthy contender; he stopped Jacare (Souza), (Yoel) Romero didn’t stop Jacare (Souza), and Robert hasn’t tested positive for steroids, so really I think it should be Robert next.”
Bisping’s response will no doubt send shock-waves through the fight community and add fuel to the fire of those claiming that Bisping is avoiding a fight with the number one ranked middleweight Yoel Romero.
The Brit’s only defence to date was against MMA legend Dan Henderson in his hometown of Manchester at UFC 204, which he won in a somewhat controversial unanimous decision. The 46-year-old Henderson, who was at the tail end of his career, knocked-down Bisping twice and very nearly had him finished in the opening two rounds.
With no date set for Bisping’s fight with St-Pierre announced it would seem that Whittaker may have to fight again before he gets his title shot. Number two ranked contender Luke Rockhold would be a perfect fit for that fight and has also expressed interest in a match-up with the 26 year old.
In any case, it seems that Aussie MMA fans are getting closer to seeing one of their own having a UFC title belt around his waist.
