Aussie lightweight Nick Patterson (14-4-1dr) is set to headline the debut offering from Melbourne’s newest MMA promotion, Hex Fight Series, on Saturday December 6 at the Springers Leisure Centre in Melbourne. ‘Banjo’ will square off with California based fighter Steve Orosco (7-0).
Patterson is currently enjoying a three fight win streak and is coming off a third round TKO win over another fighter slated for the event in Dean Purdon back in June. The Kimekai product was hoping for an earlier return than this, however he was sidelined through injury and forced from fighting for the AFC lightweight title in August. Earlier in the year, the 31 year-old also outpointed former UFC fighter, and newly crowned AFC lightweight champ, Bernardo Magalhaes.
His opponent, Steve Orosco of Team Hulk Smash is undefeated after seven pro appearances with all his fights taking place under the Xplode Fight Series banner and ending in the first round. ‘Hulk Smash’ has had a busy 2014 having fought four times this year already. Judging by past opposition however, it’s fear to say this fight will be his biggest test to date by far.
Continuing with the ‘Australia vs America’ theme for the show, the promotion has also put together a lightweight tilt between Brisbane’s Dean Purdon (5-4) and Ultimate Fighter 8 veteran Junie Browning (4-6).
Meanwhile, Wollongong based fighter Craig Martin will be aiming for five in a row when he meets Melbourne based Brazilian Rodolfo Marques.
A previously scheduled welterweight matchup, which was also the show’s original main event, between Western Australia’s Steven Kennedy and Phuket Top Team based American JJ Ambrose (21-5-2) has been scraped. Ambrose has withdrawn from the event leaving Kennedy to once again wait for a replacement.
