‘John’ Wayne Parr retained his Caged Muay Thai (CMT) Middleweight Title on Friday night as he beat Irishman James Heelan in the main event of CMT 10 at the Logan Metro Sports Centre.
While a unanimous points decision always looks dominant on paper, Heelan will travel back home with his head held high after managing a competitive performance against one of the best ever Western muay thai fighters. Despite not winning the title, he left Parr with a gift of five stitches above the right eye after cutting him with an elbow during the bout. The damage now takes Parr’s infamous stitch tally across his career to a mind-boggling 330.
The victory, the 97th in Parr’s career, takes his current win streak to five and should help keep the momentum going as he moves into the second half of the year. Parr is expected to jump back into the Bellator Kickboxing ring this December in Italy against a yet to be named opponent. The fight will be the second of his three-fight contract with the organisation.
In the night’s semi-main event, visiting New Zealand fighter Chris ‘Butcher Boy’ Wells caused a big upset when he beat local veteran Ghot Seur Noi via TKO in the second round to successfully secure Ghot’s CMT Lightweight Title. Going into the fight as the underdog, Well’s rose to the occasion knocking Ghot down three times in the round causing an automatic stoppage via the three-knockdown rule.
