In a battle of two Queensland amateur stand-outs, it would be David Martinez who would open up his professional career with a stoppage win over Peter Templer on Saturday night.
The event headlined Coastal Combat 4 which took place at the Coolum Civic Centre on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
“The Smiling Assasin” Martinez shot in for an early takedown and immediately pressured his opponent on the ground with short but heavy strikes. Templer brought an impressive amateur record and as such Martinez had to be cautious of submission attempts as he attempted to lock up an armbar and a pair of leg-locks in the first round. Martinez though never really looked too much in danger as he landed heavy ground-and-pound through-out the round.
Martinez would again get the fight to the canvas early in the second round where he stood over his opponent and unloaded with punches. The Gamebred Academy/Ignite MMA trained fighter progressed to mount and went to work with punches and elbows to force the referee to stop the fight.
The official stoppage was announced at 2:05 of the second round.
“I just did what my coaches asked me to do and it worked to a tee. Peter has some sick leg-locks, sneaky submissions and I did not underestimate him at all coming into this, trust me,” Martinez told the crowd in his post-fight interview.
Asked what he wanted next, Martinez did not hesitate in calling out an opponent across the border.
“I tell you what I want next. I want State of Origin at XFC and I’ve got a name. I want Joel Downey-Cave.”
Downey-Cave is coming off a first-round submission at Diamondback FC last month.
