NSW Central Coast standout Jamie Mullarkey was crowned the Superfight lightweight champion on Friday night in Sydney, stopping former Hex FS champion Abel Brites with a vicious right hand in the second round.
The fight headlined Superfight 9 which took place at Club Punchbowl in Western Sydney. A full replay of the event can be found below.
The first round was primarily contested on the feet in what was an entertaining and mostly evenly matched striking battle. Towards the back-end of the opening round and into the second, however, it became a different story as Mullarkey’s high paced boxing and leg kicks in particular really began to make an impact on the tiring Brites. A left-right combination from Mullarkey dropped the local favorite and a few additional left hands on the canvas was all the ref needed to see before waving the contest off.
Training out of Magnus Martial Arts, Mullarkey has now won three consecutive bouts and improves his overall record to an impressive 11-2. The 24 year-old’s two losses on his record both occurred back in 2016, coming at the hands of Luke Catubig and UFC featherweight Alexander Volkanovski.
Going into the fight, Brites was in good form, coming off back to back victories over Kiwi striker Brad Riddell and recently crowned Diamondback FC champion Ethan Duniam. The Human Weapon Gym product’s record now falls to 12-6 with the result.
With UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in his corner, Sydney’s David Francis (7-4) picked up a third round TKO against Leo Diaz (4-9) in the show’s welterweight co-main event.
Down on the scorecards going into the final frame, Diaz came out aggressive, charging Francis and looking for the knockout. However it was not enough, with the end coming as 1:45 remained in the fight with Francis taking the back of Diaz before dropping right hands to the side of Diaz’s head.
The other pro fight on the card proved to be a short-lived featherweight contest between Lion’s Den Academy product Geo Ellahi and Black Diamond/Gracie fighter Ray Skellern. Ellahi shot in for an early takedown, however Skellern locked onto the neck of the local fighter and tried to finish it with the guillotine choke. Ellahi proceeded to lift his opponent up and above his shoulders before slamming him down hard onto the canvas. Skellern was visible hurt from the impact and the ref stepped in before any further punishment.
