Whittaker (20-5 MMA, 11-3 UFC) lost his UFC gold at UFC 243 in Melbourne this past October to New Zealand’s Israel Adesanya.
Jared Cannonier (13-4 MMA, 6-3 UFC) is currently ranked number 4 in the UFC middleweight rankings. Cannonier started his career at heavyweight before making his debut in the middleweight division in November of 2018. He is riding a three-fight winning streak with TKO victories over David Branch, Anderson Silva and Jack Hermansson.
While no main event has been made official for UFC 248, it is understood that a middleweight title fight between Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero is the likely option.
