After an unsuccessful outing at “Road to UFC”, Eternal bantamweight champion Shaun Etchell will look to defend his title against former featherweight challenger Rod Costa.
The bout was confirmed by the promotion during last week’s Eternal double-header event on the Gold Coast.
It will headline Eternal 71 in Perth, Western Australia on October 29.
Etchell (7-3) captured the Eternal title back in 2021, with a unanimous decision victory over Sam Hibberd. He has had a string of unfortunate fight cancellations though did get an opportunity to impress the UFC brass in his last outing, competing on the “Road to UFC” event in Singapore back in June. The Tasmanian-based fighter was outclassed by Japanese youngster Takeru Uchida who submitted Etchell in the first round.
After losing his title opportunity to Jack Jenkins, in his most recent outing, Rod Costa made a step towards the bantamweight division, submitting Michael Mannu in a 62kg catchweight bout back in August. A regular on the Eternal cards, Costa holds a 6-4 professional record which also includes wins against Justin Van Heerden and Diego Pereira.
The Eternal 71 main card will be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass with further match-ups expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
