Accomplished Muaythai and K-1 heavyweight Paul Slowinski will meet New Zealand fighter Leamy Tato in his Mixed Martial Arts debut. The two fighters will headline the MMA Downunder 4 event scheduled to be held at the Adelaide Arena in South Australia on September 21
The promotion confirmed the match-up via social media as the fight card for the event.
Talk of Slowinski moving to MMA has been rumoured for many years with the Polish born heavyweight earlier this year spending time in Florida, USA where he trained with the Blackzilian team including Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva.
On an episode of “Hammer Time Fight Show”, Slowinski spoke about his move to Mixed Martial Arts.
“I had quite a few fight falling through this year. It’s just harder to get fights. I looked at going to UFC to keep active, keep busy. I just wanted to see how I go against guys like Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans and see what it’s all about. Training was good! Stand-up wise nothing surprised but just on the floor or against the cage I found myself in trouble. I didn’t know what to do.”
A veteran of the sport, Tato will be no easy debut MMA fight for Slowinski with the tough New Zealand fighter having in his career defeated fellow New Zealand veterans Hiriwa Te Rangi and Matthew Toa. Losses have come to Lucas Browne and Soa Palelei.
South Australian favourite Kym Robinson is also scheduled to appear on the card however a fight against Jack John has been scrapped with promoters looking for a replacement to face Robinson.
Another Muaythai champion, Charles August will return to the cage and will be looking at getting his second straight MMA win when he faces Scott Walker in a middleweight bout. Also on the card, South Australian Terry Balboa will meet Giancarlo Embradora while in a battle of two local guys Faruk Medjedovic will meet karate practitioner David Lock
