After 13 months on the Mixed Martial Arts sidelines, former UFC lightweight Bernardo ‘Trekko’ Magalhaes will make his MMA return this November in Sydney, against BJJ black belt Hugo Nunes on the JNI promoted ‘Straight Up’ event.
Although the matchup has yet to be announced by the promotion, Magalhaes did confirm the pairing with Fight News Australia today. The fight will be contested at 75 Kilograms.
The November 29 show, which will feature a mix bag of MMA and kickboxing, will take place at the Hurtsville Entertainment Centre.
Magalhaes’s most recent MMA fight was against former Brace lightweight champ Sonny Brown at the final offering from the now ‘on-hold’ Sydney based promotion Proud Warrior Productions back in September 2012. The encounter was short lived with Magalhaes dropping the Lange’s MMA product in the opening frame with a right hand.
That fight directly followed the 32 year-old’s two-fight stint in the UFC which saw him on the wrong side of the judge’s scorecards against Tim Means and Henry Martinez.
Magalhaes caught the attention of the UFC while lightweight champion in Cage Fighting Championship, a title he secured after unanimously outpointing Adrian Pang back in early 2010.
Hugo Nunes is a BJJ black belt who trains out of the Nova Uniao Jiu Jitsu affiliated Boxing Works gym in the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills. Magalhaes will no doubt serve as a tall order for Nunes, who will be making his Mixed Martial Arts debut on the night.
A Light Heavyweight State Title MMA bout between Randall Rayment and Boydie Lee Symes has been announced for the event.
Western Sydney’s Australian Top Team gym product Randall Rayment is undefeated after five pro appearances with all victories coming in the first round. He made short work of Ben Wrotniak in his last outing, submitting the late replacement in 48 seconds in the co-main event at Brace 22.
Boydie Lee Symes trains out of the newly formed Western Warrior Fight Club gym in Sydney and will be making his MMA debut when he meets Rayment.
