New Zeland born, locally based fighter Dylan Andrews was unfortunately unable to get the win in front of a parochial crowd, succumbing to an injury after the second round ended in his main card fight against fellow TUF 17 contestant Clint Hester (pictured).
Coming into the fight, Hester was the underdog and made his intentions clear early as he began swinging with heavy hooks. It didn’t take long before Andrews was able to change levels and secure the takedown. As Hester bridged up, Andrews dropped back attempting the guillotine however Hester was able to escape and get the top position. From there Hester attempted to create distance and land punches from the top however Gold Coast based Andrews worked his way back to his feet where he scored a takedown late in the round.
Andrews ducked under for a single leg as Hester swung wildly, however 34 year-old Andrews was unable to finish it. Andrews landed a nice left as Hester immediately rushed in and put Andrews on his back. Hester was able to work some short strikes against the cage as Andrews slowly got back to his feet. A visible cut had opened up over Andrews’ left eye as Andrews also stopped throwing his right hand.
In between rounds, referee Cameron Quinn stopped the fight on the advice of the doctors with replays indicating that Andrews had separated his right shoulder earlier in the round while attempting a hook.
Not the way Hester would have wanted to win, however the American walks away with his second victory in the UFC after winning in the TUF 17 finale against Bristol Marunde. It takes his professional record to 9-3. PUMMA gym fighter Dylan Andrews drops his first fight in seven outings and is now 3-1 in the UFC and 18-6, 1 no-contest as a professional.
