Mixed Martial Arts Australasia (MMAA) have announced that going forward only bouts contested under A-Class rules will be classified as professional bouts. This is to apply for all MMA promotions operating under the MMAA banner.
This is to stay in accordance with international standards and aims to provide a clearer distinction between amateur and professional bouts. B & C-Class bouts will now be listed as amateur bouts.
Mixed Martial Arts Australasia posted on their facebook page the following:
Attention all MMA promotions operating under MMAA and competitors competing at an MMAA regulated event
In alliance and accordance with International standards, only bouts that are competed under the Unified Rules for MMA will be recognised as a Professional bout (Australian A-Class).
Any bouts that are competed under B or C-Class rules are not to be recorded as Professional. These matches are recognised as Amateur.
For those unfamiliar, A-Class rules is what is commonly used in the unified rules where elbows are permitted. B-Class prohibits elbows while C-Class takes out punching to the head while grounded.
