New Zealand’s Benjamin Kelleher suffered an early injury in his bout against South Korean middleweight Jae-Young Kim which forced the referee to halt the fight only seconds after beginning.
The bout headlined the Top Fighting Championships (Top FC) 2 event that took place at the Seoul Olympic Hall in South Korea.
Kelleher used his facebook account to open up about the injury.
“Tonight I was unfortunate to spend 15 seconds in the ring, before throwing a hard leg kick and according to surgeons, torn (tearing) my posterior cruciate ligament,” Kelleher commented.
“I’m not sure why the chips have fallen this way for me. After hearing a loud pop I tried to stand and fell to the canvas, and the referee who also saw it stopped the fight,” the Darwin based fighter added.
He then went on to apologise to both the promotion, the Top FC fans and his opponent.
“I’d like to apologise to Dongjin Ha and the TOP FC fans for not putting on the spectacle I hoped the fight would be. Korea is an amazing place, and the fans here are crazy and awesome and caring and I absolutely loved being a part of this massive event. Apologies to Kim Jae Young who was a gentleman and gracious winner who came and sat with me while the surgeons checked me.”
With the injury, Kelleher suffers his second consecutive defeat after being submitted by Daniel Kelly earlier this month at AFC 9.
