Australian boxer Daniel Geale proved no match for Gennady Golovkin, with the Kazakh champion stopping the contest within three rounds at the Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night.
Thirty-two year-old Golovkin who won the silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics quickly made his power felt opening up a cut over Geale’s eye in the opening round. He followed that up by dropping Geale in the second round, before ending the contest with a flurry of punches in the third round. With Geale wobbly on his legs, the referee chose to halt the contest and give Golovkin the TKO win.
With the win, Golovkin defended his International Boxing Organisation middleweight tittle and captured Geale’s WBA middleweight title. A former 2004 Summer Olympics silver medallist, Golovkin now moves his record to an impressive 30-0, with 27 coming via a stoppage. One of the most impressive finishing percentages in boxing.
It was the third time Geale had been stopped in his professional career as the Launceston born fighter drops to 30-3.
