Some quick boxing news from today as Australian Sakio Bika captured the World Boxing Council super-middleweight title with a majority decision over 28 year-old Mexican Marco Antonio Periban.
Cameroonian born, Bika finally won a world title after failing in his last three attempts. Two judges awarded the decision to Bika 116-112 and 115-113, while the third had it a draw 114-114 for the bout which occured on the undercard of the Paulie Malignaggi and Adrien Broner. The event was held at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York.
Bika’s opponent immediately protested the decision, “I won this fight, and the people in the crowd know I won this fight,” Periban commented post-fight.
“He’s not the champion. That’s not justice. He’s going to take that belt, and it’s going to be a lie.”
Boxing website badlefthook.com scored the bout 115-113 to Bika.
The main event also proved close as Broner edged Malignaggi in a split points decision. The scores were read out as 115-113, 113-115, and 117-111 for Broner who at 23 years of age moves his professional boxing record to 27-0.
