Queensland based promotion Roshambo returned last night in an event that featured four promotional titles go up for grabs at The Chandler Theatre in Queensland, Australia.
In the headlining fight, Judo specialist Michael Tobin (pictured above) continued his undefeated run when he submitted Luke Hume in the first-round. Tobin immediately made his intentions clear as he closed the distance and inside the clinch, threw Hume to the canvas. From the bottom Hume was able to lock up a tight armbar, however the Gold Coast based fighter was able to remain calm and wriggle free. It wasn’t long before Tobin had taken the back of Hume where he was able to lock up the rear-naked choke to force the tap and capture the Roshambo featherweight title.
The win came 2:34 of the opening round as Tobin moves his record to 8-0. 7 of those wins have now come via a submission.
After winning the Roshambo welterweight title at Roshambo 1, Alex Volkanovski returned and this time captures the lightweight title with a first-round submission of Greg Atzori.
Both fighters exchanged early leg kicks before Volkanovski shot in for a takedown. It was sprawled by Atzori however the Hervey Bay based fighter could not defend the second takedown. Atzori quickly worked back to his feet however Volkanovski immediately got the fight back down to the canvas. From the top, Volkanovski landed some big punches which forced Atzori to move. Volkanovski capitalised on an opening when he locked up a guillotine choke from the top. Atzori worked back to his feet however after a brief struggle he went out unconcious, giving Volkanovski the win.
An impressive submission win for Volkanovski who will have a quick turn-around, returning to fight at AFC 8 later this month against dangerous Rodolfo Marques.
Light-heavyweight fighters Randall Rayment and Jack Johns put on an entertaining fight that was rewarded with the fight of the night honours. The way the fight started, not many thought it would go the whole five rounds but that it did, with Johns ultimately taking the unanimous decision.
Rayment had some nice throws in the opening round as the two exchanged transitions and submission attempts on the ground. Johns in particular mixing up his boxing by landing some body rips. Johns came forward in the second with a flurry of combinations, however Rayment perfectly timed the takedown by dropping levels and took Johns down only for Johns to work straight back up. Johns controlled the fight against the cage, opening up occasionally with nice combinations including more body rips.
By round three, the canvas was becoming very slippery which proved to be another obstacle. Johns got a takedown and was able to keep the top position. Rayment remained active off his back and ultimately worked back to his feet. Fighters exchanged heavy shots as the round ended. The tempo had slightly slowed in the fourth round. Rayment failed with a takedown attempt which allowed Johns to control the fight again from the top where he unloaded with strong punches and a nice elbow. Down on the scorecards, you couldn’t question Rayment’s heart and determination as the Australian Top Team fighter continued coming forward and looking for a way back into the fight. He had his chance late in the last round as he took his opponent’s back but due to the perspiration from both, Johns able to slide Rayment off him.
All three judges awarded the fight to the youngster Jack Johns who captured the Roshamo light-heavyweight title in what was his second professional fight. Impressive performance and despite the loss Rayment showed heart and skill that will make a dangerous opponent for any fighter locally.
In a women’s pinweight title right, local fighter Shauna Carew edged a close split-points decision against Sarah Lagerstrom from Washington, USA. The fight started cautiously, before Lagerstrom landed some solid kicks to the thigh of Carrew. The two exchanged punches on their feet with nothing landing significantly. Lagerstrom landed a nice superman punch before ending the round with a flurry as the first round came to an end. The punches continued from Lagerstrom however a failed guillotine choke from the American allowed Carew to trip her opponent to the ground where she was able control the fight. Carew worked from side-control to mount and seemed to have a tight armbar on before the buzzer went for the end of the round.
It was much the same in the third round as Carew finished the round on top landing punches and short elbows. Lagerstrom started the fourth round landing more leg-kicks and countering nicely with her right hand. She defended a takedown attempt from Carew and unloaded a flurry of right and left hooks. Lagerstrom again defended a takedown attempt from Carew in the last round, however as she engaged she left herself open for the takedown. Lagerstrom reversed and two eventually ended up back on their feet. Another late flurry from Lagerstrom and we were off to the judges.
Carew out-wrestled her opponent and had the cage control, however Lagerstrom landed the better strikes. In the end the judges were split with two giving it to Carew, while the other gave it to Lagerstrom. Carew takes home the win to capture the Roshambo pinweight Title.
Also on the card, Aden Hawke submitted Adam Corbett with a second left in the opening round, while Jamie Mullarkey put on a good performance against David Greaves to take home the unanimous decision.
