Four new champions were crowned last night at Combat8:04.
The show, which took place at the Newcastle Panthers Club in NSW, was headlined by a welterweight title fight between Commonwealth Games Boxer turned MMA fighter Dane Mulivai (pictured), and Muay Thai fighter Daniel Kerr.
The main event was short lived with Mulivai locking up a guillotine choke and forcing the tap from full guard at just 23 seconds. With the win, Mulivai took home the Combat8 welterweight strap while also making it 2-0 under the promotion’s modified rules, after knocking out Matt Stapleford at C8:01.
Port Macquarie’s Sam Bastin and Glen Purvis went close to five rounds to decide the promotion’s featherweight champion. In the end it was Bastin who took out the title after slamming the Muay Thai fighter to the canvas and forcing the TKO with punches from back mount.
Sydney based boxer Kerry Foley claimed the middleweight title over Kurtis Pegoraro with a solid left hook at 52 seconds in the opening round. Pegoraro survived an early knockdown only to find the finishing strike waiting for him just seconds after finding his feet.
Thirty eight year-old Tongan born boxer Walter Pupua scored a devastating first round knockout of fellow boxer Emosi Solitua to claim the Combat8 heavyweight title. Pupua went on the front foot early, and after backing up Solitua to the cage, unleashed a crumpling left hook to his chin at the 37 second mark.
