Team Australia has remained undefeated in the boxing being contested at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
After 2-0 start on day one of competition, Campbell Somerville from Victoria earned another victory for the Australian team in the Men’s Under 75kg Round of 32 fight against Joshua Redhead from Grenada.
It was an action packed bout, with Campbell landing the better of the exchanged, including a left that looked to rock his opponent in the first round. Campbell kept the pace up in the second round and forced a count by unloading against the ropes. Redhead attempted to return fire and landed a solid right.
Needing a stoppage in the last round, the boxer from Grenada came out aggressive and it worked in the Aussies’ advantage as the 21-year-old got the better of the exchanges and ultimate forced the referee to call the bout.
Somerville will return back to the ring on Sunday when he meets two-time Olympian Vikas Krishan from India.
Up tomorrow for Team Australia will be Jack Bowen in the Men’s 56kg division. He takes on Kurt Walker from Northern Ireland while Terry Nickolas returns for his second bout of the tournament, when he faces Thabiso Selby Dlamini in the Men’s 69kg Round of 16.
