Sonny Brown will attempt his first step back towards title contention on May 25th, when he faces Greg Atzori at Brace 20 in Brisbane.
Although the bout has yet to be officially announced, the promotion has confirmed the pairing with fightnewsaustralia.com.
For the Sydney fighter, this encounter will be his first since losing the title to Aussie based Spaniard Oriol Gaset at Brace 19 this past February. Although he had some early success in what was his first title defense that night, the end came for the Lange’s MMA fighter after getting dropped by a solid right hand, then finished on the ground with strikes. The TKO defeat sent Brown into a career first two-fight skid after losing to UFC castaway Bernardo Magalhaes previously to that at Proud Warrior Productions 5.
It was a Gogoplata submission win over Damien Brown that earned the former champ the vacant title back in 2011.
Hervey Bay’s Greg Atzori will also be looking to steer back on track when he makes his promotional debut for Brace. The Fightworld Cup lightweight champion lost to Tiger Muay Thai’s Cody Stevens just last week at Roshambo 1. Prior to the loss, Atzori submitted Terry Kim at Maximum Impact Fighting in Adelaide.
One thing to note in this match-up is that Atzori has also faced and lost to Oriol Gaset recently — by unanimous decision — which, in addition to both guys looking to bounce back from losses, adds an extra point of interest to the tilt.
