With UFC 284 looming closer, Robert Whittaker might be able to salvage his opportunity to fight in Perth early next year.
After coming off a recent victory against Sean Strickland, Jared Cannonier has offered his services to rematch ‘The Reaper’ in Australia, saying that he would love to go out and fight Whittaker again in Perth.
Cannonier recently appeared on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani after his victory against Strickland this past weekend, stating that he would like to fight Whittaker in February next year.
“Hell yeah if they offer the rematch I’d accept, I’ve never been to Australia before,” Cannonier said.
“I’d love to go there, and fight Robert again and hopefully get the job done then. No, they haven’t reached out about the fight.”
Due to Paulo Costa pulling out of UFC 284, because of contract disputes. Cannonier has seen an opportunity to fight for the No. 1 Contenders spot once again and to put himself back into title contention.
With Whittaker having already been removed from the event, Cannonier thinks that he might be able to persuade the UFC to book a rematch.
However, in the first fight between Whittaker and Cannonier, Whittaker was able to dominate Cannonier in all aspects of the fight. This may make the rematch less appealing in the eyes of the UFC, but having Whittaker added back onto the card will surely add tremendous value to the event.
“Maybe Robert wants to take time,” Cannonier continued.
Maybe it was Robert’s decision. Maybe he wants to take more time off then since he’s not getting this (Costa fight), he wants to have more of the holidays, really go crazy for the holidays.”
