American Top Team member Justin Scoggins (pictured right) stopped “Bra Bay” and big wave surfer Richie Vaculik (pictured left) in the opening round in what was a questionable stoppage on the preliminary portion of the UFC Fight Night 33 event
A Kenpo Karate black belt, Scoggins immediately tried to keep Vaculik at distance with sidekicks before the American secured an early takedown. Vaculik worked to his feet but Scoggins kept the constant pressure going and dropped Vaculik with a hook. Scoggins immediately was able to jump on top where he started landing short strikes. Vaculik again got to his feet but Scoggins remained on him as the pair clinched against the cage. Scoggins secured another takedown and was able to pass into mount shortly after. To escape the punishment, Vaculik immediately turned his back and Scoggins kept the top position and unleashed a flurry of punches. Vaculik remained active however referee Steve Perceval had seen enough and chose to stop the fight to a chorus of boos around the arena.
The official time was given as 4:43 of the opening round. 21 year-old Scoggins moves his record to 8-0, and also scored his sixth career win by KO or TKO. Vaculik who was making his flyweight debut dropped to 9-2.
The event was held at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Queensland, Australia and shown live in Australia on Fuel TV.
