Gold Coast based featherweight Michael Tobin suffered his first defeat on the weekend, losing to English fighter Dean Garnett at Absolute Championship Berkut 54. Tobin went down courtesy of a spinning side kick to the body in the second round.
Garnett showcased his striking from the opening bell, attacking the Aussie with an array of combinations, catching and hurting Tobin on a number of occasions. The fight could have justifiably been stopped near the end of the first with the English fighter dropping Tobin against the cage before unleashing with strikes on the mat. To his credit, Tobin did well to hold on and he closed the round out searching for a submission.
Garnett continued to really punish Tobin in the second round landing a number of solid kicks and punches before putting an end to the Aussie’s night with a spinning side kick to the body followed by a lone hammer fist on the canvas. The end came just 31 seconds into the round.
It was the first time that Tobin has tasted defeat since making his debut in 2012. With the loss, the 24 year-old, who signed a four-fight contract with Absolute Championship Berkut back in January, drops his record to 12-1.
