It was mixed results for the Aussie fighters competing tonight at One Championship “Pride of Lions” in Singapore.
Sydney based featherweight Martin Nguyen (5-1) entered the One cage for the third time and picked up his second win inside the promotion, defeating 31 year-old Filipino fighter Edward Kelly (6-3). Nguyen, 26, was awarded the victory after the doctor called a stop to the fight late in the opening round, deeming Kelly unable to continue due to bad cut to his forehead. The win followed Nguyen’s defeat at the hands of undefeated Russian and One interim featherweight title holder Marat Gafurov at One Championship “Odyssey of Champions” in September.
Meanwhile, fighting out of Lange’s MMA in Sydney, 27 year-old Natalie Gonzales-Hills’s (2-3) One Championship debut didn’t go to plan, submitting to popular local youngster Angela Lee, 19, (3-0) via a first round twister. Gonzales-Hills came out aggressive, shocking the Evolve MMA product with solid punches from up close in the clinch. Gonzales-Hills took control of the opening minute with her striking before taking Lee to the canvas. It didn’t take Lee long to get the sweep, however, and she soon transitioned to mount where she connected with short punches. From there Lee moved to Gonzales-Hills’s back and eventually locked up the submission and forced the tap.
The event took place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and was streamed live at onefc.com. The scheduled main event rematch between welterweight champion Ben Askren and Luis Santos was scrapped after Santos was unable to make the required weight limit.
