South Australian based fighter Suasday Chau’s return to his country of origin was an unsuccessful one as he went down to Arnaud Lepont in the first round of their fight at One FC 20: Rise of the Kingdom.
The fight took place at the Koh Pich Theatre in Phnom Penh in Cambodia.
The fight ended controversially as Lepont reportedly stomped on Chau’s head during an armbar attempt which caused the fight to be halted to let a dazed Chau to recover. After a pause in the action to let Chau recover, the fight restarted with Lepont pouncing on his opponent to get the finish.
Sherdog.com were on hand at the event and have a play-by-play of the fight:
ROUND 1
Chau switching stances, he gets clipped with a right hook and promptly taken down by Lepont, who gets up and attempts a soccer kick. Chau tries for an armbar, but Lepont stomps on his head and he’s badly hurt. The fight is paused and Lepont is extremely apologetic but Chau is taking a long time to recover and still looks groggy, but he eventually gets to his feet and Lepont is yellow carded before the fight recommences. They clinch and Lepont lands some knees and then knocks Chau onto his back, going to work with ground and pound. The referee is giving Chau every chance to recover but he’s turtled up and taking serious punishment from the fists and elbows of Lepont so he has no option but to call a stop to the contest.
The end came 2:21 into the opening round.
Suasday commented via social media saying, “Quitting was never an option. I could breath so therefore I must fight.
“The result is only ever a small part of this journey and I have so many more wonderful memories to cherish than to just focus on the outcome.”
“Thank you to my opponent for the challenge and ONE FC for the opportunity. I will be back,” he added.
With the loss, 33-year-old Chau drops to 4-4 as a professional while Lepont, a French fighter based in Vietnam moves to 11-4.
