In a battle of The Ultimate Fighter winners, Sydney based Robert Whittaker is set to takes on American Colton Smith at UFC 160. UFC 160 will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas, USA on May 25.
The fight was made official last night by the promotion.
Whittaker was the inaugural winner of The Ultimate Fighter: Australia vs U.K reality show at welterweight when he defeated Brad Scott in the finale back in December on the Gold Coast, Queensland.
Whittaker was under a medical suspension from that fight with a hand injury however has been cleared to return.
22 year-old Whittaker won his way to the finale by knocking out U.K fighter Luke Newman only 19-seconds into the fight before securing his place in the finale stopping Australian representative Xavier Lucas with punches. Locally, Whittaker has notable wins over Ben Alloway, Ian Bone and Corey Nelson.
Smith is an U.S Staff Sgt. in the U.S Army who was given permission to leave active duty to participate in The Ultimate Fighter 16 show. Smith went into the show with a 2-1 profressional record and was not expected to feature in the finale however Smith won all three bouts inside the house via decision, before upsetting Mike Ricci in the finale held in Las Vegas in december.
UFC 160 will be headlined by a UFC Heavyweight Title fight when Cain Velasquez will look to defend his title against Antonio Silva. Also on the card, Junior dos Santos will face off against Alistair Overeem while Glover Teixeira takes on Ryan Bader.
