Sam Goodman last night kept his spot as the mandatory challenger to take on 122-pound champion Naoye Inoue in the near future, but it did come at a cost with the Wollongong local injuring his left hand during the contest.
Goodman overcame the gritty Thai Chainoi Worawut via unanimous decision and took his record to an unblemished 19-0.
At the post-fight press-conference, Goodman stated that he “hit him [Worawut] with a left hook in the ninth and really felt something.”
“It didn’t feel quite right at all. A few dramas early on, but not enough to stop throwing. I was just trying to touch him a bit with it.”
“Look, we got through it and we won the fight,” he added.
Goodman indicated that it was already hurting around the fourth or sixth round and now will have scans to determine the extent of the injury, hoping to recover by the years end to challenge the powerful Naoya Inoue.
For Bangkok’s Worawut, who is an ex-Muay Thai fighter, it was his professional loss in the boxing ring, dropping his record to 25-1, 1 draw.
Also on the card, Liam Wilson (14-3) bounced back with a devastating eighth-round knock-out of Youssef Dib (21-2)
