Shannon Ross will get his chance to secure a spot on the UFC roster against current Legacy Fighting Alliance flyweight champion Charles ‘Inner G’ Johnson, at Dana White’s Contender Series on August 2, 2022.
Fight News Australia has confirmed the date and matchup with sources close to the situation.
32-year-old Ross (13-5) withdrew from a planned bout this month with Shaun Etchell to pursue the opportunity. ‘The Turkish Delight’ is 5-1 in his past six starts, and will follow former foe Steve Erceg into the 2022 Contender Series season.
He will have his work cut out against the 31-year-old Johnson (11-2) however. The native of St.Louis, USA has gone 5-0 since returning from a stint in boxing back in 2020. Four of those wins have come inside the distance.
Dana White’s Contender Series serves as somewhat of a ‘tryout’ for the UFC, with competitors awarded contracts at the discretion of the UFC president himself, based on their performance on the night. Typically a finish is required to catch the eye of the UFC brass.
Ross, the former Eternal MMA flyweight champion announced his signing to compete on the show last week, and subsequently caught up with Fight News Australia. See what he had to say below:
