Sydney based fighter Robert Whittaker was stopped in the first round by Stephen Thompson early today at UFC 170. The two fighters opened up the main card action at the Mandalay Bay Events Centre in Las Vegas, USA. The event was televised on Mainevent Pay-per-view in Australia on Sunday afternoon.
Whittaker began the fight with a solid jab early as he took centre of the cage. A front leg axe kick from Thompson grazed by Whittaker’s face before the American came forward with a combination of punches. Thompson circling on the outside with hands around his waist in a karate stance. A left hook missed, but the follow up straight right dropped Whittaker with the “Wonderboy” immediately pouncing on the Australian based fighter rocking him with further shots and forcing the referee to stop the fight.
The end came 3:43 into the fight as Thompson moves his professional record to 9-1 (UFC 4-1) with his third straight win. A TUF Smashes winner, Rob Whittaker drops to 11-4 (UFC 1-2).
