Pound-for-pound bragging rights will be on the line when UFC’s pound-for-pound king Alexander Volkanovski moves up to the lightweight division to challenge the champion in that division, Islam Makhachev.
The bout will headline UFC 284 with the promotion returning to Australia after a lengthy break.
Volkanovski is the reigning featherweight champion, having dispatched the likes of Chad Mendes, Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega, and Max Holloway three times. The 34-year-old is on an impressive 22-fight win streak.
His opponent Islam Makhachev captured the lightweight title back in October when he submitted Alex Oliveira to take his winning streak to 11 fights.
Both have lost just one bout in their professional careers. Volkanovski early in his career as a welterweight while Makhachev lost his second outing in the Octagon when he was stopped by Adriano Martins.
Volkanovski holds a 25-1 professional record compared to Makhachev’s 23-1.
An interim featherweight title between Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett is set as the co-main event of the card with local fighters Justin Tafa, Jimmy Crute and Jack Della Maddalena all expected on the main card.
