The main event of UFC 293 is set, with UFC superstar and middleweight champion Israel Adesanya booked to face off against number 5 ranked challenger Sean Strickland in Sydney next month, the UFC announced today.
The UFC announced via social media that the New Zealand champion will face the American in the main event of UFC 293, set to be held in Qudos arena on September 10th.
UFC 293’s main event had remained in a state of limbo for months, with the UFC seemingly targeting a fight between Adesanya and number 1 contender Dricus Du Plessis, after Du Plessis’ victory over Rob Whittaker at UFC 290.
Adesanya revealed on social media that Du Plessis was unable to make the September card due to an apparent foot injury and called for a match up with Strickland.
Aside from Du Plessis, Strickland is the only fighter ranked in the top 5 that Adesanya does not hold a victory over.
In his last fight, Adesanya recaptured his middleweight title from long-time rival Alex Pereira in the main event of UFC 287.
Strickland is heading into this fight off a TKO win over Abus Magomedov in early July.
