Aussies’ Jake Matthews has come up short against Matthew Semelsberger at UFC Vegas this afternoon.
Matthews was coming into the fight after an impressive KO/TKO victory against Andre Fialho at UFC 275, with the hopes of doing the same against Semelsberger

Play-by-play: Jake Matthews vs. Matthew Semelsberger
The first round did not go well for Matthews, getting dropped by a brutal right hand by Semelsberger at 3 minutes and 20 seconds. Matthews tries to quickly recover but receives a barrage of punches and knees, he retaliates with his own combinations but gets taken down by a single leg and gets dominated by some Ground and Pound for the rest of the round.
Matthews made his adjustments and starts off round 2 with a few combinations of his own, he gets taken down by a beautiful single leg but quickly scrambles up to his feet, landing a big left hook off the clinch break. Matthews is starting to find his rhythm and starts landing more of his counterpunches. However, Semelsberger finds his mark again by landing a big right hook in the final 30 seconds of round 2, knocking down the Aussie but he quickly scrambles back up to his feet and starts landing combinations in retaliation.
Semelsberger finds his mark again at the beginning of round 3 by landing another brutal right hand. Matthews gets knocked down and is desperately trying to survive the oncoming flurry of punches. The Aussie manages to scramble back up to his feet snatching a guillotine and pulling him into closed guard, but Semelsberger gets out. Matthews finds his moment in the final seconds of the round by landing a beautiful Muay Thai Sweep getting on top and dishing out some ground and pound to finish off the final round.
This loss brings Matthews’ record to 18-6. After losing to Sean Brady at UFC 259, Matthews went back to the gym and trained hard showing an incredible performance at UFC 275 with a brutal KO finish. Unfortunately, the Aussie could not get the job done tonight.
