Mildura based submission specialist Jesse Medina made his international debut last night in the Lebanon based promotion Phoenix Fighting Championship, but the Aussie found himself on the wrong side of a split points decision against hometown favorite Ezzedine Al Derbani.
Phoenix FC 6 took place at the Du Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Answering the call up on just days’ notice, Medina, a BJJ brown belt, looked to control the opening frames of the encounter, scoring multiple takedowns against Al Derbani and at one point mounting and taking his back. The third round was a different story however as Al Derbani was able to keep the fight standing more and took it to the Aussie featherweight with his striking.
One Out Fighter Management managed Medina (12-8), who trains out of the Mildura Fight Team, will now make the trip home to prepare for his Hex FS 14 fight against the undefeated Daniel Jones on April 21 in Perth.
